Andrew Robertson
Director

Andrew joined Dalcour Maclaren in 2005 having spent 15 years working for local and national surveying firms, undertaking a wide variety of rural practice, planning and agency work. In the three years prior to joining Dalcour Maclaren he specialised in planning and development work, acquiring and preparing sites for a developer.

In addition to advising on and dealing with a number of major utility projects at Dalcour Maclaren, Andrew manages property portfolios for major utility clients with a key responsibility for planning and development work and handling agency instructions. The work focuses on safeguarding the clients' core utility function while maximising capital and revenue streams.

Recently, he has focused on advising clients how best to reorganise their operational sites, with the disposal of surplus property and acquisition of new premises as required. Current cases include large operational depots and specialist laboratory facilities.

With one of Andrew's two sons competing in national fencing competitions, he often spends weekends driving to venues around the country and acting as coach, caterer, first aider and kit carrier!

David Kydd
Director

David joined the company in 2013 when Dalcour Maclaren and MMAssoc LLP merged. He qualified as a member of the RICS in 1986 and specialises in Compulsory Purchase Orders. He brings to Dalcour Maclaren considerable expertise: he was involved with compensation claims on the original construction of the M25, the A120 Braintree Bypass, A12 Chelmsford Bypass, A120 Stansted to Dunmow Dualling and the Birmingham Toll road.

He now advises public utilities and the Environment Agency in acquisitions, disposals and compensation liabilities. A qualified RICS valuer, David also has a full understanding of Prince2 and its implementation. With years of experience he still has a great love for his work and enjoys being part of a like-minded, professional team of people all ages. He is also a proud member of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Surveyors.

Married with two grown-up daughters, David's interests include all field sports and cookery. At the weekends you will find him rambling through the hills of Shropshire or climbing the mountains of Wales and Scotland.

George Gray-Cheape
Director

Following a career in The Black Watch, George resettled into civilian life by retraining at the Royal Agricultural University Cirencester. During his second career he has managed the land aspects of countless projects, from small land purchases through to national infrastructure and cross-county projects for gas, water and electricity.

As one of the founding directors, George is both passionate about and proud of the development of Dalcour Maclaren. He is responsible for client teams, the Oxfordshire office, quality, health and safety and environmental performance. He is also skilled at pre-empting and understanding landowners requirements of any project with an aim to satisfy both clients and grantors on completion of the project.

George stays true to his farming roots by running a herd of seven rare-breed Dexter cattle and, when he can, loves meeting landowners, agents and farmers across the country on the numerous projects he is involved with.

James Neil
Director

James' career started at Cluttons where in 10 years he grew the utility business and became a Partner. With a desire to invest in a dedicated company offering a bespoke service acting solely for utility companies, he co-founded Dalcour Maclaren in 2003. The fledgling company's USP quickly lead to it flourishing beyond James' initial vision and today he is extremely proud of how the business has grown from just three employees to over 100, even expanding in to Wales and Northern Ireland.

With a hands-on approach to clients, James also spends much of his working life sourcing new business as well as overseeing the internal business structure in all areas from HR to IT. He truly believes the key to the success to Dalcour Maclaren's growth is the calibre of its people.

Outside of the office James often finds himself competing in triathlons and, as coach of his son's under-11s rugby team, spends many damp Sunday mornings shouting on the touchline.

Jonathan Tennant
Director

Working for Cluttons for 21 years introduced Jonathan to the utility sector, in which he developed the then unusual role of acting for companies as an external agent. Having tired of the land agent's management role (which he compared to “feeding the chickens”) and with a desire to extend his work in utilities, Jonathan co-founded Dalcour Maclaren in 2003.

Jonathan is now primarily involved in the more strategic schemes – which can take him to any part of the country either as initial lead to a new project, or providing assistance with complex claims or cases where his expert witness role may be required. As always, he remains involved in developing areas of new work for the business. He takes pride in the fact that this requirement continues to be met through the skills, character and tenacity of the ever-growing team – now spread over five offices throughout the UK.

He has two grown-up children who he describes as “gainfully employed, at last!” and now the only chickens he feeds are those he has at home!

Michael Thorne
Associate Director

Michael has many years of surveying experience in residential, rural and general professional sectors. He has worked on behalf of major institutional clients including The Crown Estate, the Post Office & Telecommunications Pension Fund (Postel/Hermes) and the Society Merchant Ventures. This has included the disposal of a substantial part of the Postel 34,000 acre Rural Estate Portfolio in the early 1990s. He has acted for private, institutional and government clients on Statutory Acquisition Schemes, including Highways, EA Flood Defence Schemes and various utilities.

In the past Michael has worked as a Law of Property Act Receiver and is a RICS Registered Valuer. Joining Dalcour Maclaren in 2013, he has brought a wealth of experience to tackle some of the more complex needs of clients and enjoys working in a progressive environment. He is currently working on electricity infrastructure projects, electricity and gas governor station lease renewals, electricity substation portfolio purchases and land valuations. He is also active on flood alleviation schemes, an area in which he has specialised for a decade.

Michael has three children and likes to occasionally head off to water, fishing rod in hand. Otherwise he can be found in his garden listening to Test Match Special.

Mike Ferens
Director

Mike has been with Dalcour Maclaren since July 2013 when he joined the business as part of a merger between Dalcour Maclaren and MMAssoc LLP. He was an equity partner at MMAssoc LLP where, for 10 years, he specialised in acquisition, Compulsory Purchase and the delivery of large-scale civil engineering projects for a variety of clients with a particular emphasis on flood risk management schemes.

He has an extensive and successful background of negotiating complex agreements with a wide variety of third parties and land uses across a broad spectrum of projects. Mike leads Dalcour Maclaren’s Estates Framework Team for the Environment Agency but also acts for the British Pipelines Agency, Scottish & Southern Energy Power Distribution and Severn Trent Water Limited.

He is most proud of the fact that Dalcour Maclaren is a vibrant place to work where there are opportunities for everyone to make a difference and progress their career whilst not losing sight of the fact that work should enjoyable and rewarding.

Outside of work, Mike will usually be found in the Oxfordshire countryside with his family and – when there is time – on a golf course.

Andrew Barker
Director

A placement year with James Neil and Jonathan Tennant in Oxfordshire and Kent secured Andrew's interest in Land Agency and he has never looked back. Andrew was the fourth person to join the Dalcour Maclaren team, coming on board in 2005. He is extremely proud to have been part of developing the company and established the Staffordshire office in 2010. Hailing from northwest Lancashire, Andrew's responsibilities have enabled him to gradually work his way back to the north.

Specialising in Development Consent Orders and Compulsory Purchase Orders, Andrew provides advice to utility clients on a wide range of property matters including land rights strategy, funding requirements, land acquisitions and compensation. This means he works alongside client teams where he enjoys the buzz of fast paced, nationally significant projects. He is also an APC Assessor and PRINCE2 Practitioner.

Married with two young children, Andrew's interests include field sports, cycling and hill walking. He also retains a keen interest in the family farms.

Andrew Roberts
Director

Andrew's career started in the land agency world, as a chartered surveyor acting for landowners and farmers across a range of activities from livestock auctioneering to compulsory purchase and compensation schemes, including the A419/A417 Cirencester bypass.

He joined Dalcour Maclaren as Performance Manager in 2014, following a role at Arqiva, where he had been overseeing the multi-million pound telecoms site share business. This involved the management of customer contracts and associated processes in relation to the installation of wireless communications customers onto Arqiva-owned and controlled infrastructure.

At Dalcour Maclaren his role involves driving efficiencies and process improvements for the benefit of clients and for Dalcour Maclaren more generally. This is achieved through performance management both internally and externally, with continuous improvement a key focus.

Married with two young children, Andrew enjoys tennis and most outdoor pursuits; he also retains a keen interest in activities on the family farm.

Director

Born into a Norfolk farming family, James completed a degree in Rural Enterprise and Land Management from Harper Adams University in 2009 and qualified as a chartered surveyor in 2010. Including his placement year, James spent five years working at a national firm of surveyors, with a focus on estate management, agricultural business consultancy and renewable energy advice.

Mike Lee
Director

With a background in farming, Mike Lee graduated from Harper Adams with a degree in Land and Farm Management. He began his career as an Assistant Farm Manager on a large arable farm in Buckingham before being promoted to Farm Manager.

After leaving to travel around South America for a year, Mike joined Dalcour Maclaren in 2007 as the company’s second graduate employee. Building on his agricultural experience, he worked for utility clients such as Affinity Water, Scottish and Southern Energy and National Grid Gas.

More recently Mike’s responsibilities at Dalcour Maclaren have focused on leading a team to provide Land Agency support to some of the largest water companies in the UK. He was appointed Associate Director in December 2014; in addition to his day-to-day role, he now drives Dalcour Maclarens IT and communications strategy and is heavily involved in recruitment.

Away from the office, Mike enjoys relaxing with his wife and six-year-old son, walking his dog in the countryside and renovating his home, a seemingly endless labour of love.

Nicola Putt
Director

After graduating from Swansea University with a degree in Modern Languages and Business, Nicola moved to London to launch a career in sales and marketing. Ten years later she took a career break to have a family (during which time she managed to run her own business). In 2007 she returned to work to manage the UK sales and operations for an international property developer.

When she joined Dalcour Maclaren in 2011 as Company Administrator, one of Nicola’s duties was to oversee human resources for a staff of 38 across three offices. Now managing the HR for six offices and over 100 personnel, Nicola has developed her responsibilities in tandem with the company’s growth. She became an Associate Director in 2014.

Nicola leads all areas of HR, including recruitment, rewards and benefits – all focus areas for Dalcour Maclaren. The company was one of the first to enter into a workplace pension, doing so three years before its target date.

Looking after the operations for all offices, Nicola manages key suppliers; she has achieved qualifications in internal auditing, environmental management and health and safety. Part of her role is to ensure Dalcour Maclaren’s management system is compliant with BSI standards in quality, environment and health and safety.

In her spare time, Nicola chauffeurs her two children to their various social and sporting commitments and is studying for her final CIPD qualifications.
