Refurbishment of a 132kV Overhead Electricity Line from Melksham to Frome

  • 42kms of overhead electricity line with approximately 82 interest parties. Including both private and commercial landowners, Network Rail, Environment Agency and Highways Agency.
  • DM's role included referencing the routes, agreeing access routes, agreeing numerous site compounds, track-way and scaffold position.
  • General project management throughout the scheme.
  • Further urgent access was required to enable scaffold structures to be erected over water courses, roads and low voltage electricity cables.
  • Negotiation of both agricultural and commercial compensation claims and reporting these back to the client accordingly.

Risks & Constraints

  • Time constraints due to outage periods.
  • The wettest winter since records began meant that access routes and grantors were hesitant to allow access for the scheme to commence.
  • Limited 11kV Low Voltage cable underground route options.
  • The environmental impact.
  • Crossing of water courses.
  • A change in programme meant that landowners had to be constantly updated.

  • A DM presence constantly on site whilst the main section of the works took place.
  • Face to face discussions with landowners on a constant basis ensured that stakeholders were kept fully informed.
  • Detailed working method statements agreed with both contractors and landowners.
  • Proactive stance during construction and identifying concerns early.
